Of course we want everyone to try the beautiful Croatian wines we sell. But we also think it is our obligation to warn of the risks of consuming (too much) alcohol. Hence, on this page we provide some information about alcohol consumption.
Occasionally, drinking a glass does not mean you are alcoholic. Alcohol deafens the mind and takes away the feeling of insecurity.
The general guidelines on alcohol use are as follows:
• Adults from 18 years up: maximum 10 standard glasses per week. Same for men and women.
• Spread alcohol consumption over several days a week.
• Have at least two non-alcoholic days a week, to physically restore and prevent habit formation. Recommended by the WHO.
• Young people under 18 years of age do not drink alcohol.
Occasionally, a lot of drinking is more harmful to the body than drinking a few glasses of alcohol, a few times a week. This almost never results in physical problems. Large amounts of alcohol drink are called 'binge drinking'. This has a number of risks. There is an increased chance of damage to all organs that come into contact with the alcohol. It can lead to a heart attack. In the case of young people, the chance of this is somewhat smaller. Alcohol thins blood, which increases the risk of, for example, cerebral haemorrhage.
Excessive alcohol consumption may have serious psychological and physical consequences in the long term. For example, the memory disorder Korsakoff is a direct consequence of alcohol abuse and an important organ like the liver can be (irreparably) affected by excessive use of the alcohol.

Facts about alcohol
It takes about three hours for your body to break down the alcohol in a large (250 ml) glass of wine.
Why does sparkling wine make you drunk so fast?
The bubbles in sparkling wine help the body absorb alcohol into the bloodstream more quickly, as do fizzy mixer drinks with spirits.
Genes and alcohol
Some ethnic groups have genetic variations that prolong the endurance of acetaldehyde in the body. This can cause unpleasant nausea and flushing, but may also have the effect of putting them off drinking. Genetics can also play a part in whether someone is predisposed to become an alcoholic.
Women get drunk faster
Women usually tolerate less alcohol than men, but this has nothing to do with their body weight or size. If a woman and a man of the same size and build drank the same amount of wine, the woman would still show a higher blood alcohol concentration (BAC). This is because women have a higher fat content than men and fat does not absorb any alcohol. The intoxicant therefore spreads to less liquid, leading to a higher BAC.
Alcoholism
Overuse of alcohol can tip a social drinker into becoming an alcoholic. The body develops a physical tolerance to alcohol and it becomes psychologically difficult to stop drinking.
Positive effects
Moderate alcohol intake may reduce stroke risk. Of all wines, the Croatian Frankovka is one of the most 'healthy' red wines. The University of Bordeaux's College of Health Sciences examined the component in the wine in 2009 to prevent arteriosclerosis and reduce the risk of a heart attack.
Often the healing effect of red wine is given to the substance resveratrol, only the amounts of this substance in most wines appear to be too low to have any effect. Unlike resveratrol, the amounts of procyanidin present in wine are high enough to have significant effect.
Clinical trials have shown that two glasses of procyanidin-rich red wine have a very positive effect on health. Research has now shown that our Feravino Dika Frankovka is one of the wines that contain the most procyanidin of all wines.
Conclusion
So, a glass of wine a day keeps the doctor away? We don’t know, as we aren’t doctors. But we can say, one or two glasses a day at least makes your life more joyful!
