When you think of Croatia, you think of summer by the sea. And when you think of summer, you think of a good barbecue. That can only mean one thing: Croatia must have some excellent barbecue wines. But what actually goes well with grilled food?
This tasting box includes six Croatian wines that pair beautifully with everything from the barbecue. From juicy pork belly to a lovely rib of beef, and from grilled vegetables to spicy sausages — there’s a wine for every moment around the grill.
Let’s begin with an aperitif. The crowd-pleasing Istrian Malvazija is ideal. Light, crisp and approachable — perfect to start with, and surprisingly good alongside grilled vegetables.
The Graševina grape is a Croatian classic and incredibly versatile. This fresh white wine has enough body and character to hold its own next to pork belly, sausages, or firm grilled fish.
When it comes to the barbecue, red wine takes centre stage — but not the heavy, oaky kind. Think bright fruit and lively acidity. Two Croatian grapes stand out here:
Teran and Frankovka. Both produce fresh, juicy reds that shine when slightly chilled, and pair beautifully with lamb, veal or spicy sausages.
As the meat gets bolder, so should your wine. For a proper rib of beef or a thick-cut steak, go for a wine made from the Plavac Mali grape. This robust, sun-drenched variety is closely related to Primitivo and Zinfandel, and holds its own next to anything cooked over flames.
