This award-winning Istarska Malvazija from Medea is made from the original version of this grape variety from 200 years ago. The grapes grow on almost 50 year old vines at the Montiron location. This is a white wine with a beautiful story and fantastic good gastronomic possibilities. It is the white pearl of the Medea winery.
Winery: Medea
Region: Istria
Grape: Istarska Malvazija (the original grape variety and not one of the 40 clones used). The grapes grow at the Montiron location. The wine is ‘single vineyard’, meaning that the grapes all come exclusively from one vineyard with vines that are almost 50 years old. What makes this wine even more special is that these are the only original Malvazija vines that are on terra rossa soil (red soil).
Year: 2023
Taste: Montiron has the freshness of a young Malvazija on the one hand, but at the same time also has the serious characteristics of a matured white wine. This greenish yellow wine has many aromas of apple, pear, acacia flower and minerals. The wine has fine acids and in the taste you can taste lemon, red grapefruit, vanilla, toast and caramel. The aftertaste is long and layered.
Serve with: Drink this wine with shellfish, poultry, salmon, tuna steak, firm white fish or delicate pasta dishes with fresh tomatoes.
Serving temperature: 10-12 degrees Celsius
Type of wine: Top quality wine with protected designation of origin.
Harvest: The grapes ripen late and therefore the wine does not come out in the spring, like most white wines, but in the summer.
Vinification: The grapes are hand-picked and have had a maceration of 24 hours. Then 10 percent of the wine went into French oak barriques and the rest into stainless steel. The wine got its extra aromas through bâttonnage sur lie.
