Medea is based in Vodnjan, in the south of Croatia’s Istrian peninsula. The winery developed from the former Agroprodukt Vodnjan cooperative and has carried the name Medea since 2005, inspired by the well-known figure from Greek mythology.
Over the years, significant investment has been made in both the vineyards and the cellar. Medea combines modern winemaking techniques with respect for the region and the grape varieties that have been grown here for generations. The result is a contemporary, clean style without losing its distinctive Istrian character.
Medea’s vineyards are planted on the rich red soils that are so characteristic of parts of Istria. The Mediterranean climate brings warm, dry summers, plenty of sunshine and relatively mild winters. This gives the grapes ample opportunity to ripen fully, while the location and local terroir help retain freshness and balance in the wines.
Olive growing also plays an important role at Medea. The combination fits perfectly with the Mediterranean landscape around Vodnjan, where wine, olive oil and gastronomy have long been closely connected.
One of Medea’s key grape varieties is Istarska Malvazija, Istria’s signature white grape. It produces fresh, aromatic wines that pair beautifully with fish, shellfish, grilled vegetables and Mediterranean cuisine.
Teran is equally inseparable from Istria. This red grape variety is known for its freshness, dark fruit and spicy character. Medea also works with international varieties such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, creating a natural bridge between Istrian tradition and a modern, approachable style of wine.
